Practical family support

Practical coaching and training for parents and carers

Parents and carers know their family routines best. Coaching creates space to understand a goal, practise relevant strategies and adapt them so they are realistic for everyday family life.

People first

Who this service may support

Parents and carers of children

Coaching supports communication, participation, routines or behaviour goals identified with the treating team.

Families supporting adults

Where appropriate and consented to, family supporters learn strategies connected with an adult’s goals and preferences.

Wider support networks

Consistent guidance can include other trusted supporters when the person agrees and this helps implementation.

In your own words

Common starting points

Making strategies practical

Many families want help adapting professional recommendations to real routines, time and resources.

Responding consistently

Clear shared approaches can help supporters feel more prepared across common situations.

Building confidence over time

Coaching allows families to try an approach, discuss what happened and refine the next step without judgement.

Meaningful progress

Everyday goals

  • Improving family understanding of agreed therapy or behaviour-support strategies.
  • Building confidence to use practical approaches in relevant daily routines.
  • Creating clearer communication between families and the treating support team.

Individual and collaborative

What support may involve

  1. Discussion of family priorities, current routines and strategies that have already been tried.
  2. Demonstration, guided practice and reflection connected with an agreed support plan.
  3. Resources or follow-up actions selected for the family rather than a generic training package.

A clear path

How to get started

  1. Start with a conversation

Tell us about the person, their strengths, everyday routines and the goals that matter now.

  2. Confirm the right next step

The team considers suitability, location, timing, fees and the most useful service or assessment.

  3. Review support together

Recommendations and supports are reviewed as priorities, environments and participation change.

Funding and appointment access

Coaching can be scheduled with or without the child present, depending on the goal.

Marsden Therapy is a Registered NDIS Provider and welcomes agency-managed, plan-managed and self-managed participants, as well as private clients. Plan coverage depends on individual circumstances.

Service suitability, delivery setting, timing, fees and availability are confirmed with the team before support begins.

Clinic, home, school, community, telehealth, day care and child care options are considered when appropriate for the person, service and goals.

Useful to know

Frequently asked questions

Is parent coaching about blaming parents?

Quite the opposite. Coaching is collaborative and strengths-based. It recognises family knowledge and focuses on practical support rather than judgement.

Can coaching happen without the child present?

Sometimes. The most suitable format depends on the goal, the person’s needs and the clinician’s professional judgement.

Will one strategy work for every family situation?

Rarely, and that is expected. Strategies are reviewed and adapted because people, environments, routines and priorities differ between families.
